STUPID SMELLY BUS TOUR ARRIVES IN PHOENIX

Gardner’s Book Service will host the “Junie B. Jones® Stupid Smelly Bus Tour” — a national tour, sponsored by Random House Children’s Books, that brings Junie B. live and in-person, across the country to meet her fans. She will ride in the Stupid, Smelly Bus to 15 cities for fun-filled events. Fans will enjoy Junie B.’s hilarious antics through live, theatrical performances based on the bestselling Junie B. Jones® series. Events will also include cool Junie B. giveaways, and an official “book stamping.”

To allow as many guests as possible, Gardner’s Book Service will be hosting the event at an alternate location. It will be performed at Moon Valley Bible Church, 16207 N. 3rd Ave, Phoenix (Greenway and 3rd Ave). Children are welcome to bring one book from home for stamping. Additional Junie B. A personal note from Gardner's:
Arizona is losing millions of dollars in uncollected sales tax by allowing remote online retailers to ignore their obligation to collect sales tax. Many retailers, including Barnes & Noble, Sears, and Wal-Mart, already collect and remit sales tax for online purchases. Under current sales tax law, any out-of-state retailer is required to collect and remit sales tax for purchases made by residents in Arizona if the retailer has a physical presence in our state. A physical presence means that they have a store, warehouse, office, or sales agent in the state. Amazon, with three warehouses in Phoenix, still continues to avoid collecting and remitting Arizona sales tax. The people who work in these warehouses have children who attend our schools and the trucks that deliver the good drive on our roads.

So we have been trying to get a bill passed that would level the playing field for for online and local businesses alike. In spite of our successful lobbying to secure support—44 yes votes (including 24 Republican legislators) and only 3 definite no votes, we could not get the bill out of the House Rules Committee for a floor debate and vote. We are now trying to get it attached to a budget bill that is moving slowly through both Houses. This tax collection could save many worthy programs and add teachers to district classrooms.

We are in desperate need of your help. Please contact your state legislators immediately. Urge them to use the monies they will collect for police and firefighters, for our schools trying to educate our children, so that we can have the quality of life that we deserve. We don’t want to lose any more libraries or close any more schools or parks. Some of the budget cuts wouldn't be necessary if everyone was paying their fair share.

Thanks so much for your support. Time is of the essence and if you could do this today, that would be wonderful. No one knows how long the House will be in session or when the budget will wind its way through towards the Governor’s desk. The sooner the legislators hear from you the better they will listen when we next visit them to encourage their support.

The Passing of Brian Jacques

In honor of Read Across America and the birthday of Dr. Seuss, Gardner’s will be giving out a free limited edition Cat in the Hat/Dr. Seuss book bag to any teacher or educator who purchases total $25 or more (one bag per person). This includes only purchases made in person at our warehouse.

Because of the overwhelming response to last year’s give-away, our friends
at Random House have generously provided us with 500 Educator Packets! This year's title is "SEUSSational Science Explorabration"

The kit includes: NEA's Read Across Amercia 2011 Science Explorabration Field Guide; 30 Cat in the Hat Knows about That (CITHKAT) Stickers, 30 CITHKAT Bookmarks; a Cat in the Hat Knows About That DVD Sampler.

The kits are targeted to the primary grade level but could be adjusted for older age groups depending on your creativity. How do you get one? Just email your name, school and grade or specialty to our special give-away address, giveaway.gbsbooks@gmail.com before midnight on Friday, February 18, 2011. Special considerations: Your school must be in our normal delivery area (unless you plan to pick-up), only one kit per email address (if there are six teachers
in your team, each must request their own kit from their own email address). Kits can be picked up at the warehouse or will be delivered to your school during the week of February 21-24. Any unclaimed kits at the warehouse on February 25 will be released to anyone on a first come-first served basis.

Valley Metro School Outreach
Valley Metro Transit Education Programs offer your students skills for a lifetime. Designed for students, teaches, and school administrators, the Valley Metro School Outreach Program introduces young learners to their public transit system, teaching the importance of making wise choices and how to ride safely. Valley Metro provides a variety of FREE transit education services. Classroom presentations, assistance with planning fieldtrips using local and light rail service and a FREE Group Field Trip Pass for all eligible groups.
