Throughout the book, she shares real student responses to surveys and conversations, a play-by-play description of her English class block, and sample lessons that vividly demonstrate successful practices.

Readers will discover how to:

use formative assessments to differentiate instruction;

maximize student work time and immediately assess student learning within the workshop model;

get trustworthy data from annotations—the most important assessment tool for reading;

give students timely and useful feedback;

assign grades that accurately reflect what students learn and what teachers value.

So What Do They Really Know? will start shipping in mid-July. Many retailers, including Barnes & Noble, Sears, and Wal-Mart, already collect and remit sales tax for online purchases. Under current sales tax law, any out-of-state retailer is required to collect and remit sales tax for purchases made by residents in Arizona if the retailer has a physical presence in our state. A physical presence means that they have a store, warehouse, office, or sales agent in the state. Amazon, with three warehouses in Phoenix, still continues to avoid collecting and remitting Arizona sales tax. The people who work in these warehouses have children who attend our schools and the trucks that deliver the good drive on our roads.

So we have been trying to get a bill passed that would level the playing field for for online and local businesses alike. In spite of our successful lobbying to secure support—44 yes votes (including 24 Republican legislators) and only 3 definite no votes, we could not get the bill out of the House Rules Committee for a floor debate and vote. We are now trying to get it attached to a budget bill that is moving slowly through both Houses. This tax collection could save many worthy programs and add teachers to district classrooms.

We are in desperate need of your help. Please contact your state legislators immediately. Urge them to use the monies they will collect for police and firefighters, for our schools trying to educate our children, so that we can have the quality of life that we deserve. We don’t want to lose any more libraries or close any more schools or parks. Some of the budget cuts wouldn't be necessary if everyone was paying their fair share.

Thanks so much for your support. Time is of the essence and if you could do this today, that would be wonderful. No one knows how long the House will be in session or when the budget will wind its way through towards the Governor’s desk. The sooner the legislators hear from you the better they will listen when we next visit them to encourage their support.

If you know the names of your state senator and representatives, visit here: http://www.azleg.gov/MemberRoster.asp for their contact info. When he moved to the classroom, he incorporated speaking in all the subjects he taught because he saw the lasting impact it had on students as a real-world skill.

In Well Spoken Erik convincingly argues that developing effective speaking skills is worth more time than it usually receives in classrooms, and concisely sets out a framework for teaching speaking that can be used from elementary to high school.

You and your students will find practical strategies for crafting, delivering, and evaluating speeches, with applications beyond formal presentations—from interviews and discussions to debates and answering questions in class. In Beyond the Bubble, Grades 2-3 (and the forthcoming companion book for grades 4-5), Maryann Wickett and Eunice Hendrix-Martin explore students' thinking through 30 sample problems that span five strands: number, measurement, algebra, geometry, and probability.

From actual conversations with hundreds of students about their answer choices, the authors found that both correct and incorrect responses often painted an inaccurate or incomplete picture of students' understanding. This book extends Debbie Diller's best-selling work on literacy work stations and classroom design to the field of mathematics. In Math Work Stations you'll find ideas to help children develop conceptual understanding and skills, use math vocabulary as they talk about their mathematical thinking, and connect big ideas to meaningful independent exploration and practice. This book details how to set up, manage, and keep math stations going throughout the year. There's even a chapter devoted solely to organizing and using math manipulatives. Each chapter includes:

key concepts based on NCTM and state math standards;

math vocabulary resources and literature links;

suggested materials to include at each station for the corresponding math content strand;

ideas for modeling, troubleshooting, differentiating, and assessment; and

reflection questions for professional development.

Throughout the book, Debbie has included hundreds of color photos showing math work stations in action from a variety of classrooms in which she has worked. Charts, reproducible forms, and math work stations icons are included to provide everything you'll need to get started with stations in your classroom right away.

Contents
Acknowledgments
Chapter 1: What Is a Math Work Station?
Chapter 2: Organizing and Managing Math Materials
Chapter 3: Getting Started with Math Work Stations
Chapter 4: Beginning Number Concepts Work Stations
Chapter 5: Addition and Subtraction Work Stations
Chapter 6: Place Value Work Stations
Chapter 7: Geometry Work Stations
Chapter 8: Measurement Work Stations
Picture Glossary of Math Materials
Appendix
References
Index

Gardner's Book Service is pleased to be Arizona's exclusive Stenhouse titles distributor. That fall they published six titles. Today, a dozen employees work in their offices overlooking Monument Square in the heart of Portland, Maine, editing, marketing and producing a catalogue of more than 200 books and videos.

Stenhouse publishes professional development books and videos by teachers and for teachers. All of the titles are grounded in a philosophy of education that respects both teacher and learner. And all are designed to integrate theory, research, and practice in an accessible manner.

Good professional resources encourage teachers to step back and ponder important questions, such as: "Why do we teach these concepts in these ways?," and the closely related, "Is there a better way?"
Their titles cover a range of literacy topics, from reading comprehension to classroom management. On a larger level, the publishing program strives to support professional growth and create a culture of inquiry for teachers at all stages of their career and for learners of all ages.

Stenhouse is part of Highlights for Children and a division of their subsidiary Teachers' Publishing Group.

Visit their webpage at www.stenhouse.com for more information.

Want To Offer Your Review of A Children's Book?

We are constantly offering reviews and information about various children and youth books.
